Origin and background of the character
Billy is the iconic ventriloquist’s dummy from the horror-thriller film series *Saw*, created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell in 2004. In the films’ plot, this figure with a pallid complexion, dark eyes and cheeks marked by red spirals is not possessed by a supernatural force. It serves as a means of communication for John Kramer, a methodical serial killer nicknamed ‘Jigsaw ’ (The Puzzle Killer). Jigsaw uses this puppet, dressed in a black tuxedo and a red bow tie, to appear on television screens in front of his captive victims. It is through audio recordings played via the puppet that he sets out, in a deep, distorted voice, the strict rules of the tests and complex mechanical traps to which they must submit if they are to hope to survive.
