Origin and character lore

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Endowed with superhuman strength and agility, able to climb walls and warned of danger by his ‘spider-sense’, he chooses to protect New York whilst trying to maintain an often turbulent personal life. His motto – that with great power comes great responsibility – has become one of the fundamental principles of the Marvel Universe.

Miles Morales is another young hero who has taken on the identity of Spider-Man. Originally from Brooklyn, he possesses abilities similar to those of Peter Parker, including, notably, optical camouflage and a bioelectric attack. His black and red costume gives him an instantly recognisable visual identity. The presence of Peter and Miles in this bookend illustrates the passing on of the Spider-Man legacy between two heroes who share the same values of courage, responsibility and protecting others.
