Created by Masahiro Anbe in the manga *Shinryaku! Ika Musume*, Squid Girl is a humanoid girl from the depths of the ocean. Exasperated by the relentless marine pollution caused by human activity, she emerges onto Japan’s beaches with a grandiose ambition: to invade Earth and enslave humanity to punish the polluters. However, her plans for conquest come to an abrupt end as soon as she makes her first attempt to establish a base of operations. Whilst trying to swat a mosquito, she accidentally smashes through the wall of the beach house and restaurant ‘Lemon’. To pay for the damage, the owners (the Aizawa sisters) force her to work as a waitress. Equipped with ten super-powerful hair-like tentacles capable of lifting heavy loads and squirting squid ink, she proves to be a surprisingly efficient employee, gradually setting aside her dreams of galactic tyranny to discover the joys of Earthly customs, fried prawns and friendship.
