Origin and character lore

Ninjis are small creatures inspired by ninjas that regularly appear in the Super Mario universe. Their black silhouette allows them to blend easily into dark environments, whilst their large eyes and red buttons make them instantly recognisable.

The character made their debut in *Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic*, a game later adapted in the West under the title *Super Mario Bros. 2*. In this instalment, the Ninjis mainly act as enemies capable of standing still or running whilst making regular leaps to hinder the heroes’ progress.

They subsequently reappear in several games in the franchise, notably *Super Mario World*, where they hide in the dark areas of Bowser’s Castle. Their dark appearance and rapid movements directly reflect the ninja theme from which they take their name.

In the Paper Mario series, however, some Ninjis take on a more peaceful role. Those in Star Valley, for example, look after the young Star Children before they set off for the sky, showing that these creatures are not always portrayed as adversaries.

More recently, the Ninjis have appeared in *Super Mario Bros. Wonder*, where they jump in time to the music in certain levels. Ninji has also become a playable character in *Super Mario Party Jamboree*, marking a significant evolution for this once-minor creature.
