Character background and lore

Maomao is the protagonist of *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*. Raised in the pleasure quarter by an apothecary, she possesses a thorough knowledge of medicine, plants and poisons. After being kidnapped and then sold as a servant to the imperial palace, she initially tries to keep a low profile, but her intelligence and curiosity soon attract attention.

Thanks to her keen powers of observation, Maomao solves numerous mysteries relating to the health of the concubines, cases of poisoning and the intrigues of the court. Her pragmatic demeanour, her sometimes unsettling fascination with toxic substances and her lack of interest in social conventions stand in stark contrast to the elegance of the palace. Her relationship with Jinshi, a high-ranking official of remarkable beauty, is also one of the story’s central themes.
