Character background and lore
Maomao is the main heroine of *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*. Raised in the pleasure quarter by an apothecary, she possessed remarkable knowledge of medicine, medicinal plants and poisons from a very young age.
Her life is turned upside down when she is abducted and then sold as a servant to the imperial palace. Maomao initially seeks to keep a low profile and quietly complete her term of service, but her scientific curiosity and keen sense of observation make this ambition almost impossible.
When a mysterious illness strikes the Emperor’s children, Maomao quickly realises that a substance used at court could be to blame. This intervention catches the attention of Jinshi, a high-ranking palace official of exceptional good looks.
Jinshi soon discovers that the unassuming maid possesses knowledge far beyond what her status would suggest. He therefore begins to entrust her with various medical problems, potential cases of poisoning and mysteries arising within the court.
The anime’s official description rightly portrays Maomao as a young woman with a particular fascination for medicines and poisons, whose knowledge eventually catches Jinshi’s eye.
Maomao, however, stands out for having a personality very different from that of traditional heroines in courtly tales. She is pragmatic, often sarcastic and surprisingly unimpressed by the beauty or status of those around her.
Her true enthusiasm really comes to the fore when she encounters a rare plant, an unusual medicine or, even more so, a poison she has never had the chance to study before. Her curiosity can then far outweigh her instinct for caution.
This scientific knowledge gradually becomes essential in an environment where political intrigues, rivalries between concubines and seemingly inexplicable accidents often conceal far more complex causes.
Several important figures at court revolve around her, notably Jinshi, Gaoshun, Gyokuyou, Lihua and other members of the inner palace. The official anime has confirmed Aoi Yūki in the role of Maomao and Takeo Ōtsuka as Jinshi.
This Trio-Try-iT figurine thus showcases one of the most original heroines in recent animation: an extremely observant apothecary, fascinated by dangerous substances and capable of solving the mysteries of the court through her intelligence rather than her strength.
