Origin and world of the character (Lore)
Joel Miller is a hardened and disillusioned survivor who operates as a smuggler in Boston's quarantine zone, twenty years after a mutation of the Cordyceps fungus destroyed human civilisation. Traumatised by the loss of his daughter at the start of the epidemic, he has buried his sensitivity to become a pragmatic and ruthless man. His life is turned upside down when he is entrusted with the care of Ellie, a 14-year-old girl mysteriously immune to the infection. Tasked with escorting her through a ruined country populated by hostile survivors and fearsome infected, this journey of initiation will break down his shell and give rise to a close paternal relationship, forcing him to make extreme choices to protect his new family.
