Origin and world of the character
R.J. MacReady is the main character in John Carpenter's 1982 science fiction horror film The Thing, based on the short novel Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell. The plot revolves around a team of American scientific researchers stationed at an isolated base in Antarctica. Their daily lives are disrupted by the appearance of an extraterrestrial shape-shifting life form capable of assimilating, imitating and identically replacing any living organism. MacReady, the station's helicopter pilot, becomes the impromptu leader of the group in an attempt to identify the creature that has infiltrated the team and prevent it from escaping into inhabited areas. The film uses an atmosphere of paranoia and isolation in the heart of the polar ice.
