A successful manga
Known in Japan under the name Kimetsu no Yaiba, the manga Demon Slayer written and drawn by the author Koyoharu Gotōge is one of the most successful of this generation. As proof, the total circulation of the franchise has reached 150 million copies as of February 2021 as well as over 100 million copies that have been sold. The story is so captivating that the animated film adaptation has become the biggest box-office success in Japan, dethroning Chihiro's Journey, which had never been surpassed since its release in 2001.
The demons of Kimetsu no Yaiba
In this Japan of the XXth century, demons fond of human flesh walk in the streets looking for new human preys to devour. In opposition to them, we discover the demon slayers, warriors whose mission is to kill demons and defend humans.
Demons are evil creatures, possessing impressive strength and agility and powers beyond human capabilities, capable of changing the shape of their bodies, healing their wounds rapidly by accelerated regeneration. Some demons, coming from a higher rank, also have special abilities called 'blood powers'. These are powers that can vary from one demon to another. Furthermore, these creatures of the night can only be killed by being exposed to daylight, poisoned with wisteria or decapitated with a Sun Sword.
Demon Slayers
The Demon Slayers are the warriors from the Demon Slayers army. This army of warriors is not an organisation set up by the government, it is an organisation that acts secretly to protect humans from demons that have been acting silently for at least a millennium before the beginning of history.
Ranks of the organisation
In the Demon Slayer Army, beginners usually start at the bottom of the ranking ladder, which is divided into several types of ranks, and then they gradually increase their level and can move up the ranks according to their personal progress, as well as their individual skills and achievements.
Individual salaries are increased accordingly, with the lowest level being around 200,000 yen, compared to the salaries of the Pillars, the very high level of the slayers. The latter can choose their salter so that they earn as much as they want, but after all, the Pillars are their own elite category and there are only ten of them.
An atypical story
The story, which takes place in the remote Japan of the Taisho era (1912-1926), tells the tale of Kamado Tanjiro, the eldest teenager of a large family living in the mountains with his siblings and mother. Tanjiro feels responsible for his family since the death of his father and does everything to take care of them as best he can.
One evening, while going down to the village at the foot of the mountain to run an errand, night falls and the young teenager is forced to spend the night at an old man's house, warning him of the demons that prowl the night to eat men. When he returns home the next morning, Tanjiro is horrified to discover the lifeless bodies of his entire family except for his sister Nezuko. However, the creature that attacked his entire family did not leave Nezuko unharmed, as she is transformed into a demon.
Tanjiro makes it his mission to find a remedy to make his little sister human again and then embarks on a long training to become a slayer.
