Character background and lore

Ron Simmons is a former American football player who became a professional wrestler. After a distinguished university career at Florida State University, he turned to wrestling and made a name for himself, notably in the WCW. On 2 August 1992, he defeated Big Van Vader to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and became, according to the WWE, the first African-American to be officially recognised as a singles world champion in sports entertainment.

In the WWF/WWE, Simmons is also known as Faarooq. He became the leader of the Nation of Domination before teaming up with Bradshaw – later known as JBL – to form the Acolytes, and subsequently the Acolytes Protection Agency (APA). The duo, renowned for their particularly physical style, won the World Tag Team Championship three times and became one of the defining teams of the Attitude Era.

Towards the end of his career, Ron Simmons also became famous for a recurring catchphrase consisting of a single word: ‘Damn!’. He would appear following particularly absurd or embarrassing situations before uttering this catchphrase, which became a true trademark amongst the WWE audience. His career was officially recognised with his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.

This POP! No. 218 directly references this final phase of his career by depicting Simmons wearing his ‘DAMN’ T-shirt, making one of his most famous catchphrases the central feature of the figurine’s design.
