Character background and lore

Astarion is a High Elf and a vampire offspring whom the player can recruit as a companion in Baldur’s Gate 3. For nearly two centuries, he was forced to obey the vampire Cazador Szarr, his master, who used him to lure victims into his lair. His abduction by a nautiloid and the implantation of an illithid parasite have temporarily enabled him to resist Cazador’s authority and walk in daylight once more.

Charismatic, sarcastic and deeply scarred by his past, Astarion seeks, above all, his freedom. His personal history confronts the player with his desires for vengeance and power, as well as the consequences of the choices they may make when faced with his former master. His elegance, biting humour and complex backstory have made him one of the game’s most popular characters.
