Character background and universe (Lore)

Hal Jordan is a test pilot whose life is turned upside down when he is called to the crash site ofAbin Sur’s spacecraft; Abin Sur is an alien member of the Green Lantern Corps. Mortally wounded, Abin Sur chooses Hal as his successor and entrusts him with his power ring. Hal thus becomes the first human to officially join this intergalactic organisation.

The Green Lantern Corps is responsible for maintaining order across the various sectors of the universe. Each member is given a ring capable of transforming their will into structures of green energy. The power and precision of these creations depend on the imagination, concentration and courage of their user.

Hal is appointed protector of Sector 2814, which includes Earth, amongst other worlds. His daring, his piloting skills and his ability to overcome fear enable him to gradually become one of the most renowned Green Lanterns in the Corps. DC portrays him as one of the ring’s most legendary bearers.

During his training, Hal is mentored in particular by Sinestro, then regarded as one of the most powerful members of the Corps. Their relationship, however, evolves into a deep-seated conflict when Sinestro reveals his desire to impose order through fear and founds his own Corps, powered by yellow energy.

Hal battles numerous cosmic threats, works alongside the Justice League and maintains close ties with the other human Green Lanterns, including John Stewart. Originally, Hal was tasked with meeting and training John so that he could become his successor in protecting Earth.

In *Lanterns*, Hal takes on the role of the experienced Green Lantern paired with a new recruit. Their investigation into a murder committed on Earth leads them to explore a case whose consequences could extend far beyond the scope of an ordinary investigation.
