The Scarecrow, alias Jonathan Crane, is one of Batman’s recurring enemies in the DC Universe. A former specialist in psychology and fear, he develops toxins capable of inducing terrifying hallucinations in his victims.

In *The New Batman Adventures*, his appearance is radically reworked to make him look more menacing, with an almost cadaverous face and a costume that emphasises his nightmarish appearance. This version has become one of the most memorable depictions of the character in animation.

Crane uses fear as a weapon, seeking not so much to physically defeat his opponents as to exploit their deepest traumas and phobias. Batman himself regularly becomes the target of his experiments.
