Origin and background of the character
The character of Mulan is inspired by the legendary Chinese figure Hua Mulan, whose story is recounted in the ancient poem The Ballad of Mulan, before being adapted by Disney Studios into the eponymous 1998 animated film. The plot is set in ancient China, threatened by a Hun invasion. To save her elderly, ailing father from forced conscription, the young woman decides to disguise herself as a man in order to secretly enlist in his place under the identity of Ping. The specific design of this figurine captures the moment of her visual and psychological transition, as she uses her father’s sword to cut off her hair and don the family armour.
