Character background and lore

Bruce is a great white shark whom Marlin and Dory meet during their journey to Sydney. Despite his imposing appearance and natural reputation as a predator, he actively seeks to behave peacefully towards other fish.

Together with his companions Chumy, a hammerhead shark, and Anvil, a mako shark, Bruce organises meetings in the wreck of a submarine. These gatherings function as a support group during which the three sharks try to control their feeding instincts.

Their motto is repeated like a collective promise: fish must be regarded as friends, not as food. Bruce therefore welcomes Marin and Dory enthusiastically and invites them to join the meeting, despite the clownfish’s understandable wariness.

The situation takes a dramatic turn when a drop of Dory’s blood lands on Bruce. The scent immediately reawakens his hunting instinct and drives him to chase the two fish through the submarine. This scene creates a comical contrast between his sincere good intentions and the power of his natural reflexes.

Bruce is not, however, a true antagonist. He is portrayed as a sociable and kind-hearted character who is struggling with a part of himself that is difficult to control. His motto has thus become one of the film’s most famous lines and sums up the humorous tone of this encounter.
