Origin and world of the character

The character of Ghostface made his first appearance in the cinema in 1996 in the film Scream, directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. Visually inspired by Edvard Munch's famous painting The Scream, this disguise is used by the franchise's various antagonists to conceal their identities during successive waves of murders in the fictional town of Woodsboro. Structurally, Ghostface has become a recurring figure in the slasher film genre, characterised by his anonymous phone calls to his victims and the use of a hunting knife.
