Mr Miyagi, whose full name is Nariyoshi Miyagi, is Daniel LaRusso’s mentor in *The Karate Kid*. Although he appears unassuming and reserved, he proves to be an exceptional karate master, guided by a philosophy in which technique cannot be separated from calm, discipline and respect.

His teaching method has achieved cult status thanks to exercises that at first seem unrelated to combat, such as polishing cars, sanding a floor or painting a fence. Daniel later discovers that these repetitive movements have enabled him to internalise the basics of karate instinctively.
