Character background and lore

Daniel LaRusso is the protagonist of *The Karate Kid*, released in 1984. After moving to California with his mother, he becomes the target of several pupils at the Cobra Kai dojo, notably Johnny Lawrence.

Daniel then meets Mr Miyagi, a quiet man who agrees to teach him karate. However, his training gets off to a surprising start: instead of traditional fighting techniques, Miyagi asks him to carry out various tasks such as polishing cars, sanding a floor or painting.

These repetitive movements later turn out to be genuine defensive manoeuvres. Daniel gradually realises that each task has enabled him to develop karate reflexes without even realising it.
