Character background and lore

Maleficent is the main antagonist in Sleeping Beauty. Furious at not having been invited to the celebration organised for Princess Aurora’s birth, she appears before the court and casts a terrible curse: before her sixteenth birthday, the young girl will prick her finger on the tip of a spindle and die.

The fairy Pimprenelle manages to soften the spell. Aurora will not die, but will fall into a deep sleep from which only the kiss of true love can awaken her. Maleficent then spends several years searching for the princess to ensure that the prophecy is fulfilled.

Based in the Forbidden Mountain and accompanied by her raven, Diablo, Maleficent commands an army of creatures and wields powerful dark magic. She can conjure flames, create forests of brambles and transform herself into a huge dragon to confront Prince Philip.
