Character background and lore

Belle is an independent and curious young woman who lives with her father Maurice in a small village. Passionate about books, she dreams of discovering faraway places and experiencing adventures similar to those she finds in her novels.

This passion sets her apart from the other villagers, who regard her as strange. Gaston, the local hunter, wants to marry her, but he fails to understand either her intelligence or her desire for a different kind of life. Belle therefore refuses the limited role he seeks to impose on her.

When Maurice goes missing, Belle sets out to find him and discovers the Beast’s castle. She agrees to take her father’s place as a prisoner, thereby performing an act of courage and devotion. Disney portrays Belle as a heroine whose free spirit cannot be confined and who gradually learns to look beyond the Beast’s appearance.

At the start of her stay, Belle feels isolated in this vast estate. The enchanted servants, however, try to make her feel welcome and help her discover the castle’s wonders. Among these is a monumental library containing thousands of books.
