Character background and lore

Before becoming the Beast, the character was a prince living in a sumptuous castle. One night, he refused to take in an old woman who had come seeking shelter. She then revealed her true identity as an enchantress and punished him for his arrogance and his inability to see beyond appearances.

The prince is transformed into a monstrous creature, whilst his servants are turned into enchanted objects. The entire castle is cut off from the outside world, and the curse can only be broken if the Beast learns to love another person sincerely and is loved in return.

The enchantress leaves him a magical rose. Its petals gradually fall, marking the time he has left to break the spell. When the last petal falls, the transformation will become permanent. The rose thus becomes both a symbol of hope and a constant reminder of his past failure.

Years later, Maurice gets lost in the forest and seeks refuge at the castle. The Beast takes him prisoner, but Belle offers to take her father’s place. Their relationship begins amid fear and mistrust: the prince tries to assert his authority through anger, failing to realise that affection cannot be won through coercion.

A turning point comes when he saves Belle from a pack of wolves. In return, she tends to his wounds and begins to discover a more sensitive side to his character beneath his exterior. The Beast gradually learns to listen, to be patient and to put Belle’s happiness before his own interests.

His decision to let the young woman return to her father marks a crucial stage in this transformation. By granting her her freedom, even though he risks losing any chance of breaking the spell, he performs, for the first time, a truly selfless act.

Disney portrays the character as a prince cursed by the absence of love in his heart. The spell can only be broken when he truly learns to love and becomes capable of receiving love from another person. Belle eventually sees beyond his appearance and discovers the deeply human being he has become.

During the final confrontation, the Beast spares Gaston despite their fight. She is then mortally wounded by the hunter, but Belle declares her love for him before the last petal falls. The curse is then broken, restoring the prince and the castle’s inhabitants to their human forms.

This POP! Premium figure brings together the two main symbols of his transformation. The ball gown evokes his growing closeness to Belle, whilst the rose under a glass dome serves as a reminder of the passing of time and the journey required to move from arrogance to compassion.
