Origin and character background
Pepe the Prawn (full name Pepino Rodrigo Dynamic Gonzales) is a fictional puppet created by Bill Barretta for the Muppets universe, first introduced in the television programme *Muppets Tonight* in 1996. Although his physical appearance resembles that of a prawn or an orange crustacean with four arms and multiple antennae, the character repeatedly claims to be a Spanish ‘King Prawn’. Characterised by his strong accent, his assertive temperament and his tendency to punctuate his sentences with the phrase ‘okay’, Pepe appears alongside other members of the troupe, such as Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, in the franchise’s sketches and film productions.
