Character background and universe (Lore)

Sam Eagle is one of the recurring characters in the Muppets universe. Inspired by the bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States, he is characterised by his solemn demeanour, his staunch patriotism and his obsession with discipline, culture and adherence to the rules.

Amidst the troupe’s extravagant and unpredictable characters, Sam regularly attempts to instil a greater sense of seriousness. His rigid demeanour and perpetually stern expression often have the opposite effect, with his efforts to maintain order becoming a source of comedy in their own right.

In *The Muppets’ Treasure Island*, Sam Eagle plays Mr Samuel Arrow, first mate to Captain Abraham Smollett, played by Kermit. Arrow is portrayed as a methodical, pompous sailor who is particularly attentive to safety and adherence to procedures aboard the Hispaniola.

The ship has been hired to take Jim Hawkins and his companions to an island where Captain Flint’s treasure is said to be hidden. Captain Smollett quickly becomes suspicious of part of the crew, unaware that several sailors are former pirates secretly led by Long John Silver.

Silver manages to lure Samuel Arrow away from the ship by asking him to test a small boat. He then falsely announces his disappearance, taking advantage of the memorial service held in his honour to divert attention and allow his accomplices to seize the treasure map.

The role of Samuel Arrow suits Sam Eagle particularly well: both are characterised by their seriousness, their commitment to the rules and their difficulty in coping with a chaotic crew.

This Pop! No. 1806 thus recreates one of Sam Eagle’s most recognisable on-screen appearances, transforming him for the occasion into a naval officer tasked with assisting Kermit on the voyage to Treasure Island.
