Origin and world of the character
The character of Apollo is a superhero created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Bryan Hitch, appearing for the first time in 1998 in the comic book Stormwatch (vol. 2) #4, published by WildStorm before being fully integrated into the DC Comics universe. He acquires his superhuman abilities (enhanced strength, invulnerability and flight) through bioengineering modifications that allow him to absorb and manipulate solar energy. Within the storyline, he is a member of the vigilante team "The Authority" and is historically characterised as one of the first openly gay superheroes in mainstream comics, sharing his life story and relationship with his team-mate Midnighter.
