Origin and character’s universe
Released in 2004 and directed by Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead is an acclaimed British horror comedy, the first instalment of the famous Blood and Ice Cream trilogy (or Cornetto trilogy). The plot follows Shaun, a thirty-something Londoner stuck in a tedious routine, dividing his time between a dead-end job, tensions with his girlfriend Liz and endless evenings at The Winchester pub with his lazy flatmate Ed. His life is suddenly turned upside down when the city is overwhelmed by a rapid-onset epidemic turning the population into the living dead. Forced out of his lethargy, Shaun becomes the leader of a group of survivors and displays unexpected courage (often armed with nothing more than a cricket bat) in an attempt to rescue his mother and win back Liz’s heart. The film has become an absolute staple of pop culture, celebrated for its dark humour, sharp dialogue and brilliant homages to the films of George A. Romero.
