Origin and lore of the item

The Green Shell is one of the oldest and most recognisable items in the Super Mario universe. It usually belongs to the Koopa Troopas, turtle-like creatures who frequently serve in Bowser’s armies.

In platform games, Mario can make a Koopa retreat into its shell by jumping on it. Once struck, the shell slides rapidly in a straight line, knocking over any enemies in its path. It can also bounce off walls and return towards the player, making it as useful as it is dangerous.

The Green Shell also plays an important role in the Mario Kart series. When thrown, it follows a straight path and bounces off walls. Unlike the Red Shell, it does not automatically head towards an opponent: using it therefore requires greater precision and foresight.

Drivers can also keep a Green Shell behind their kart to protect themselves against certain attacks. It can thus serve as both an offensive projectile and a makeshift shield during a race.
