Character background and lore

Haruhi Suzumiya is a brilliant, bossy secondary school pupil who is perpetually on the hunt for extraordinary phenomena. Uninterested in an ordinary school life, she claims she wants to meet aliens, time travellers and people with supernatural powers. She therefore founds the SOS Brigade, a club dedicated to investigating mysteries and unexplained events, and draws Kyon and several other pupils into her activities.

Without being fully aware of it, Haruhi herself possesses a power capable of altering reality according to her emotions and desires. The other members of the SOS Brigade therefore seek to maintain her balance whilst concealing their true nature. Her energy, her unpredictability and her desire to turn everyday life into an adventure take centre stage in *The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya*.
