Origin and background of the aircraft

In Top Gun: Maverick, the Darkstar is an experimental hypersonic aircraft developed as part of a secret US Navy programme. Maverick is tasked with piloting it to reach speeds close to Mach 10, despite the threat of the project being cancelled.

The aircraft is equipped with two types of propulsion: turbojet engines used during the early stages of flight and scramjets designed for hypersonic speeds. Although fictional, its design is inspired by real-world aeronautical research and was conceived to look technically credible on screen.
