Recreate one of cinema’s most iconic aircraft with this model of Maverick’s F-14A Tomcat, brought to you by Revell under licence from Top Gun. Inspired by the cult film released in 1986, this 1/48 scale kit allows you to build a replica of the carrier-based fighter piloted by Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell and his radar intercept officer Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.

The model consists of 97 plastic parts to be assembled. Once completed, it measures approximately 39.4 cm in length, 40.7 cm in wingspan with the wings extended and 10.1 cm in height, offering a size large enough to showcase the Tomcat’s distinctive silhouette.

The model features a detailed two-seater cockpit and variable-geometry wings that can be angled forwards or folded back. This feature allows the model to be displayed in various flight configurations and recreates one of the most recognisable technical characteristics of the real F-14.

A pilot figure is included, along with a detailed landing gear and various weaponry components. The decals provided allow you to reproduce the markings of the aircraft associated with Maverick in Top Gun.

This traditional model kit requires assembly using glue, followed by painting. Classified as difficulty level 4, it is aimed at model-makers aged 12 and over who already have some experience of gluing and painting.

Origin and background of the aircraft

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a two-seater carrier-based fighter developed for the US Navy. Designed primarily for the defence of aircraft carrier strike groups, it is characterised by its twin engines, twin vertical stabilisers and variable-geometry wings.

These wings can adjust their angle depending on speed and flight requirements. They remain fully extended at low speeds to improve lift during take-offs and landings, then fold back to reduce drag during high-speed flight.

The cockpit accommodates two crew members. The pilot sits at the front, whilst the radar interception officer, seated at the rear, manages, amongst other things, the detection, navigation and long-range weapon systems.

The F-14 made its maiden flight in 1970 and entered service with the US Navy during the 1970s. It remained one of the US Navy’s main carrier-based fighter aircraft for more than three decades before being withdrawn from US service in 2006.

In the film *Top Gun*, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell and Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw fly an F-14A with the US Navy. The two men are selected to join the elite school responsible for training the US Navy’s finest fighter crews.

Maverick is a talented, daring and sometimes undisciplined pilot. Goose acts as his radar intercept officer, but also as his best friend and the person capable of tempering his riskiest decisions.

The film’s numerous aerial sequences, shot using real aircraft and aircraft carriers, helped transform the F-14 into an icon of popular culture. Revell, in fact, presents this aircraft as one of the most iconic fighter planes in the history of cinema.

Although the product description sometimes mentions *Top Gun: Maverick*, this model corresponds to Maverick’s aircraft from the first *Top Gun* film of 1986, as indicated by the presence of Goose, the markings and Revell’s official description.
