Character background and lore

Kenpachi Zaraki is the captain of the 11th Division of the Gotei 13 and bears the title ‘Kenpachi’, traditionally associated with the Shinigami considered to be the most powerful of his generation. The official Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War website describes him as a fighter who lives almost exclusively for the pleasure of facing powerful opponents.

His thirst for battle is such that he deliberately wears an eye patch capable of reducing his spiritual pressure, in order to prolong his battles against weaker opponents. This self-imposed limitation perfectly illustrates his character: for Kenpachi, victory often matters less than the intensity of the battle itself.

During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Kenpachi faces Retsu Unohana, who turns out to be the very first holder of the title of Kenpachi. Their duel in the Muken allows Zaraki to overcome the limits he had unconsciously imposed on himself since childhood and gradually regain the full extent of his power.

This development leads him to gain a deeper understanding of his Zanpakutō and, later, to unleash his Bankai. In this form, his appearance becomes far more feral and his physical strength reaches extreme levels, though at the cost of finding it much harder to control this power.
