Character background and lore

Vegeta is the prince of the planet Vegeta and one of the last survivors of the Saiyan race. The son of King Vegeta, he grew up convinced that his royal birth and natural potential placed him above other warriors.

After the destruction of his planet by Frieza, Vegeta continues to serve the galactic tyrant alongside Nappa and Raditz. However, he harbours a deep hatred for his master and bides his time, waiting for the opportunity to become powerful enough to free himself from his authority.

When he learns of the existence of the Dragon Balls on Namek, Vegeta travels to the planet in the hope of gaining immortality. His aim is to use this power to defeat Frieza and take his place at the head of the galactic empire.

On Namek, Vegeta successively faces several of Frieza’s soldiers, including Cui, Dodoria and Zarbon. He uses his power, strategy and knowledge of the enemy forces to eliminate his former allies and recover some of the Dragon Balls.

However, the arrival of the Ginyu Force forces him to cooperate temporarily with Krillin and Son Gohan. Despite their rivalries, the three fighters must join forces to survive against Frieza’s elite warriors.

Vegeta then faces off against Frieza, believing he has reached the level of the legendary Super Saiyan. He quickly discovers that his opponent possesses several transformations and power far superior to his own.

After being brought back to life thanks to the Dragon Balls, Vegeta witnesses the clash between Goku and Frieza. He then realises that his rival has fulfilled the Saiyan legend that he himself had sought to achieve.

The Frieza Saga marks a crucial stage in his development. In it, Vegeta gradually transitions from being a ruthless enemy to a temporary ally, before permanently joining the defenders of Earth in the subsequent story arcs.
