Origin and background of the creature

The Cactuar, traditionally known as ‘Pampa’ in several French translations of Final Fantasy, is one of the most recognisable creatures in the series. Its appearance is inspired by a green humanoid cactus, depicted in a strange running pose with outstretched arms and legs.

Despite its deliberately simple and amusing design, the Cactuar is often a particularly fast opponent that is difficult to hit. In several instalments, it is also known for using the ‘1,000 Thorns’ attack, capable of inflicting a fixed amount of damage on its target.

Over the course of the games, the Cactuar has become a true Final Fantasy mascot, just like the Chocobos, Mogs and Slimes from Dragon Quest. Its minimalist silhouette lends itself particularly well to decorative items and everyday accessories.
