A central character in the prequel Crisis Core, Zack is Aerith Gainsborough’s first love and becomes Cloud Strife’s best friend and role model. It is in the wake of the tragic events at Nibelheim that Zack protects Cloud – who is in a catatonic state and poisoned by Mako – as they flee the Shinra Corporation across the world. His final heroic sacrifice against an entire army of Shinra soldiers at the gates of Midgar will seal Cloud’s fate, bequeathing to him his sword, his dreams and his honour, and making Zack the shadowy figure indispensable to the planet’s survival.
