Origin and background of the character

In the cult manga and anime series InuYasha by the famous mangaka Rumiko Takahashi, Bankotsu is the supreme leader and most powerful member of the Shichinintai (the Band of Seven), a mercenary commando unit of unprecedented violence resurrected by the demon Naraku. Despite his youthful appearance and laid-back demeanour, Bankotsu is a ruthless fighter endowed with superhuman physical strength, enabling him to wield his heavy, gigantic halberd, the Banryû (Sword Dragon), with disconcerting ease. Driven by a unique sense of honour towards his brothers-in-arms and an unquenchable thirst for blood, his fierce duel with Inuyasha marks one of the darkest and most intense story arcs of the feudal period.
