Dungeons & Dragons, the unforgettable game of dungeons
To the products
A worldwide phenomenon, the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons has been around since 1974. With such an age, it could have been long forgotten, but never mind, it is regularly updated and has found its way to the big screen on several occasions. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson's game has even inspired one of the most popular Netflix series...
A little vocabulary
First of all, we need to talk about the French title 'Donjons & Dragons'. Without a thorough knowledge of the language of Shakespeare, we might think of it as an innocent translation of the English title 'Dungeons & Dragons'. But as you play the game, you soon realise that it's not really about dungeons, the famous towers that adorn medieval castles.
In fact, the English word 'dungeon' refers to an oubliette, a sort of prison where people you wanted to make disappear were thrown, without killing them directly. (But in real life, it seems that dungeons were simply cellars and that the myth of prisons was invented later... but never mind, let's get back to our dreams!)
