Origin and character background (Lore)
Released in 1922 and directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Nosferatu the Vampire (Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens) is a historic milestone in German Expressionist silent cinema. An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel *Dracula*, the story explores Gothic horror through the tragic fate of the inhabitants of the town of Wisborg. Ellen Hutter, the wife of the young clerk Thomas Hutter, embodies the very essence of innocence, beauty and romantic virtue.Spiritually bound to her husband, Ellen senses from afar the dangers of his journey to Transylvania and suffers violent bouts of sleepwalking as Count Orlok draws nearer to their town. When the vampire takes up residence opposite her home, bringing with him the plague and swarms of rats, Ellen discovers the terrible truth in an old grimoire: the monster can only be defeated if a woman with a pure heart holds his attention until daybreak, making him forget the cock’s crow. By agreeing to sacrifice her own life to save her husband and her town, Ellen lures the Count into her bedroom, providing cinema with one of its most poetic and dramatic climactic scenes, magnificently symbolised by this figurine.
