Origin and background of the character
Ryoga Hibiki (Rayan in the French version) is a major character in the manga and anime series Ranma 1/2, created by the mangaka Rumiko Takahashi. The eternal rival of the protagonist Ranma Saotome, Ryoga is characterised by an extremely poor sense of direction, which causes him to get lost for days or even months whenever he travels. Following an incident at the cursed springs of Jusenkyo in China, he is struck by a curse: he transforms into a small black pig whenever he is splashed with cold water. In this animal form, he is taken in by Akane Tendo, who adopts him as a pet without knowing his true identity and names him ‘P-chan’. Constantly on the move with his nomad’s kit and bamboo umbrella, Ryoga alternates between intense martial arts duels and comical situations arising from his dual appearance.
