Origin and background of the character
The character of Oscar the Grouch originates from the famous American educational television programme Sesame Street (adapted in France under the title 1, rue Sésame), created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett in 1969. The story is set in a vibrant and welcoming urban neighbourhood, where humans live alongside puppets (the Muppets) created by Jim Henson to explore concepts of learning and living together. Oscar is a hairy green monster who has chosen to live inside a metal rubbish bin situated between Big Bird’s nest and 123 Sesame Street. Characterised by his dreadful temper, his unconditional love for rubbish, mess and anything that’s broken, he finds a paradoxical joy in being miserable and annoying those around him. He shares his cramped space with Slimey, a small, highly intelligent orange earthworm who is one of the few beings for whom Oscar feels any affection. This figurine is directly inspired by his timeless design, celebrating the grumpy humour and diverse personalities that are the show’s greatest asset.
