OVER THE GARDEN WALL - POP Animation N° 2545 - Wirt

Venture into the mysterious depths of the Unknown with this POP! Animation figure No. 2545, dedicated to Wirt, one of the two protagonists of the Cartoon Network mini-series *Over the Garden Wall*, also known in French as *La Forêt de l’Étrange*. Designed by Funko, it depicts the young traveller in his distinctive outfit, gently holding the frog that accompanies his brother Greg on their journey.

Wirt is instantly recognisable by his large, cone-shaped red hat. This accessory dominates the figurine’s silhouette and emphasises the character’s deliberately angular lines. A few strands of brown hair peek out from under the hat and fall haphazardly across his forehead.

His face wears a worried expression, emphasised by a slightly raised eyebrow and the hesitant position of his hands. This demeanour perfectly matches his cautious and anxious nature: Wirt is constantly assessing the dangers around him and often imagines the worst-case scenarios before making a decision.

The figurine also features his dark blue cloak, fastened at the neck with several gold buttons. The red lining of the garment is visible at the sides, whilst a light-coloured shirt, grey trousers and two shoes of different colours complete his outfit. This unusual look, put together for Halloween, contributes to the character’s timeless and almost folkloric feel.

With a stated height of approximately 13.2 cm, this version is noticeably larger than a standard POP!, mainly due to its very elongated hat. Funko markets it under reference number 93427 and box number 2545.

Character background and universe (Lore)

Over the Garden Wall is a Cartoon Network animated mini-series following two half-brothers, Wirt and Greg, who find themselves lost in a mysterious forest known as the Unknown. During their journey, they encounter strange villages, supernatural creatures and characters whose intentions are often difficult to discern.

Wirt is the elder of the two brothers. Reserved, sensitive and particularly self-conscious about how others perceive him, he is far more cautious than Greg. He loves poetry and plays the clarinet, but prefers to hide these passions for fear of being ridiculed.

His behaviour contrasts sharply with that of his younger brother. Greg forges ahead enthusiastically, makes up songs on the spot and trusts strangers, whilst Wirt is constantly on the lookout for potential dangers. This caution can be useful, but it regularly turns into indecision or pessimism.

At the start of their journey, Wirt sees Greg mainly as an extra burden. He criticises him for his distractions and reckless actions, without immediately recognising the courage and optimism that often enable the pair to carry on.

The two brothers are accompanied by Béatrice, a blue bird who claims she can lead them to a woman capable of helping them return home. Wirt is wary of her, but nevertheless agrees to follow her through the Unknown.

The little frog featured in this POP! is discovered by Greg right at the start of the story. The young boy gives it several names in turn before settling on Jason Funderberker. The animal initially appears to be merely a silent companion, but later reveals a surprising ability to sing and speak.

Wirt’s journey is, above all, one of personal growth. His lack of confidence and fear of failure gradually make him vulnerable to the despair spread by the Beast, a creature that seeks to keep travellers lost in the Unknown.

When Greg finds himself under direct threat, Wirt is finally forced to abandon his passive attitude. He realises that no one will come to resolve the situation for him and chooses to confront the Beast in order to save his brother.

This decision marks the culmination of his development. Wirt does not suddenly become fearless, but he stops letting his worries dictate his every action. He accepts his responsibility towards Greg and learns to act in spite of his fear.

The Funko figurine accurately captures Wirt as he is at the start of the adventure: a frail figure beneath an oversized hat, a worried expression and a hesitant posture. The frog resting in his hand, however, adds a softer touch and serves as a reminder of the bonds that are gradually forming between the travellers in the Unknown.
