Add the most unsettling embodiment of the Unknown to your collection with this POP! figurine Item No. 2549, dedicated to The Beast, the main antagonist of the Cartoon Network miniseries *Over the Garden Wall*, also known in French as *La Forêt de l’Étrange*. This Funko release is available with the option to obtain a Chase variant, depicting the appearance concealed beneath its shadowy silhouette.

In its standard version, The Beast appears almost entirely black. His massive head has no visible features apart from two large white eyes, whilst branched antlers extend from either side of his skull. This minimalist design reflects the way the character is usually depicted in the series: an indistinct shape moving amongst the trees and rarely exposed to light.

Its long, slender body adopts a slightly hunched posture. One arm extends out to the side, whilst the other transforms into a cluster of branches or plant-like fingers encircling his torso. Several black layers resembling leaves, roots or shreds of bark cover his shoulder and chest.

The standard version features a phosphorescent effect around the eyes. After exposure to a light source, these can emit a bluish glow in the dark, reinforcing the impression of an invisible creature watching over travellers from the depths of the forest. The packaging also bears the words ‘Glows in the Dark’.

The Chase variant retains the same general silhouette, antlers and plant-like cloak, but features a much more detailed appearance. The face and body take on a pinkish-grey hue, with a multitude of tiny black holes scattered across the skin. Several human faces appear to be trapped within its torso and limbs, whilst its open mouth and furrowed features give it an expression of distress.

This transformation directly references the very brief revelation of the Beast’s true appearance in the series. The Chase figure also features phosphorescent eyes and can be identified by a specific sticker on the box. The manufacturer’s images show the standard dark version and this variant—which reveals the human forms contained within its body—separately.

Character background and universe (Lore)

Over the Garden Wall follows half-brothers Wirt and Greg, lost in a strange forest known as the Unknown. During their journey, they meet an old woodcutter who warns them of a terrifying creature lurking amongst the trees: the Beast.

The Beast usually takes the form of a large, black, antlered figure. It rarely appears in broad daylight and prefers to remain at a distance, using its voice, songs and lies to influence lost travellers.

Its power lies primarily in despair. It seeks to convince those who lose their way in the Unknown that they will never find their way back. When a person abandons all hope, their body can gradually transform into an Edelwood tree, the wood of which is then used to produce a dark oil.

The Beast manipulates The Woodsman in particular. It leads him to believe that the soul of his missing daughter resides in a lantern and that he must continually feed its flame with Edelwood oil. The woodsman thus fells the trees without realising that they come from travellers who were once lost in the forest.

When Greg agrees to follow the Beast in order to protect his brother, the creature imposes a series of absurd tasks upon him. The young boy gradually wears himself out in the cold and begins to be enveloped by the branches of a tree, mirroring the process that transforms desperate souls into Edelwood.

Wirt finds his brother and then confronts the Beast directly. The Beast attempts to offer him the same deal as it did the woodcutter: to keep Greg’s soul in the lantern and spend the rest of his life tending its flame.

Wirt realises, however, that the creature is carefully avoiding the light. He deduces that the lantern does not contain the soul of the woodcutter’s daughter, but that of the Beast itself. The Beast is therefore dependent on the very object it claims merely to be using.

The woodcutter finally refuses to continue his work and extinguishes the lantern. The Beast vanishes along with the flame, putting an end to its immediate influence over the forest and allowing the father to be reunited with his daughter.

The series does not provide a specific origin for the character. The Beast functions primarily as an embodiment of despair, abandonment and the temptation to give up. He does not directly pursue his victims: he leads them to believe that they are already lost.

The standard version of this POP! captures the form in which the creature appears throughout almost the entire series. The Chase variant, on the other hand, depicts the fleeting revelation of its body, composed of human forms integrated into a plant-like structure. The two variants thus illustrate the two dimensions of the character: the abstract shadow lurking in the forest and the terrifying reality concealed beneath that darkness.
