Light up the dark paths of the Unknown with this POP! Animation No. 2547 figurine dedicated to The Woodsman, the mysterious woodcutter from the Cartoon Network miniseries Over the Garden Wall, known in French as La Forêt de l’Étrange. The Woodsman wears a tall, irregularly shaped dark grey hat. Its slightly tilted crown, marked by several creases, gives him an old-fashioned appearance, instantly recognisable within the series’ autumnal setting. A few grey strands of hair peek out on either side of his face.

Character background and universe (Lore)

Over the Garden Wall follows half-brothers Wirt and Greg, lost in a mysterious forest known as the Unknown. During their journey, they meet The Woodsman, a solitary old man who warns them of the presence of a fearsome creature known as the Beast.

The Woodsman roams the woods with a lantern fuelled by oil extracted from the trees of Edelwood. He is convinced that this flame contains the soul of his missing daughter and that if it were to go out, he would die for good.

This belief keeps him under the Beast’s influence. The Beast encourages him to fell trees and keep the lantern burning constantly, exploiting his guilt and his hope of one day finding his child again. The character thus initially appears as a disturbing presence, but his actions are driven above all by the fear of losing the one he loves.

The Woodsman meets Wirt and Greg right at the start of their journey. He warns them of the dangers of the Unknown and intervenes when a menacing creature attacks an old mill. His brusque and distrustful behaviour contrasts with the efforts he makes to protect the two boys.

The series gradually reveals that the trees of Edelwood are not merely plants. They are linked to travellers who lose their way in the forest and abandon all hope. By keeping the lantern lit, the Woodsman therefore unwittingly contributes to the mechanism used by the Beast to strengthen its power.

When Wirt discovers the truth about the lantern, he refuses the deal offered by the creature. The Woodsman then realises that the flame never contained his daughter’s soul and that he has been manipulated for years.

He finally turns against the Beast and extinguishes the lantern, putting an end to its hold over the forest. This act requires him to accept the possibility that he may have lost his daughter, but it also allows him to break free from the cycle of fear and servitude in which he was trapped.

The story’s conclusion reveals that his daughter is still alive and had been waiting for him to return home. The character thus finds what he had been searching for all along, not by continuing the labour imposed by the Beast, but by finding the courage to renounce the lie that held him captive.

The axe and lantern featured together on this POP! figure encapsulate his entire journey. The former represents the gruelling labour he carries out in the woods, whilst the latter symbolises his paternal love, his guilt and the manipulation from which he must ultimately free himself.
