Origin and background of the character
The Cheshire Cat is one of Alice’s most enigmatic and philosophical encounters in the animated feature film*Alice in Wonderland*, released in 1951 by Walt Disney Studios and based on Lewis Carroll’s novel. With his pink and purple striped coat and a unique ability to appear and disappear at will (sometimes leaving only his iconic broad smile floating in the air), this cheeky feline guides Alice through Wonderland with absurdly illogical reasoning. Mischievously declaring that ‘everyone’s mad here’, he pokes fun at the strict rules of the real world. This ‘Sketched’ version pays a superb tribute to the work of Disney’s Golden Age artists, highlighting the dynamic lines of the animation sketches that brought this unpredictable and timeless pop culture character to life.
