Origin and background of the character
Princess Aurora is the central heroine of the animated masterpiece*Sleeping Beauty*, released in 1959 by Walt Disney Studios and adapted from Charles Perrault’s famous fairy tale. Cursed at birth by the wicked fairy Maleficent, she is doomed to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die on her sixteenth birthday, a sentence commuted to a hundred-year slumber by the fairy Pimprenelle. To protect her, her three guardian godmothers (Flora, Daisy and Pimprenelle) hide her deep in the woods under the guise of Rose, a simple peasant girl. This ‘Sketched’ version depicts the heroine as she sings a gentle serenade to the forest animals, dreaming of the Prince Charming she met in a dream. Its design celebrates the artistic heritage and traditional illustration work of the artists from the golden age of Disney Studios.
