Origin and background of the character
Cruella de Vil is one of the most famous, cruel and eccentric villains in the history of world cinema, introduced in the animated masterpiece *101 Dalmatians* (One Hundred and One Dalmatians), released in 1961 by Walt Disney Studios. Obsessed with fashion, luxury and extravagant furs, this wealthy London heiress has no qualms about recruiting the crooks Jasper and Horace to kidnap her friends’ Dalmatian puppies in order to create a unique black-and-white spotted coat. This ‘Sketched’ version pays a vibrant tribute to the film’s revolutionary visual style. It was the very first time that the Walt Disney animation team had used the xerography technique, which allowed the artists’ dynamic, raw pencil lines to be transferred directly onto the transparent celluloid, giving Cruella her highly expressive and angular graphic design.
