Origin and background of the character
Patch is one of the most famous and intrepid Dalmatian puppies from the animated film*One Hundred and One Dalmatians*, released in 1961 by Walt Disney Studios and adapted from the novel by Dodie Smith. Recognisable by the distinctive black patch around one of his eyes, Patch is a brave little dog and a huge fan of the television adventures of the guard dog Hurricane. When the infamous Cruella de Vil orchestrates the kidnapping of Pongo and Perdita’s litter with the aim of turning them into a fur coat, Patch is not intimidated by the henchmen Jasper and Horace. This ‘Sketched’ edition celebrates the exceptional artistic legacy of this feature film, which was the very first to use xerography technology to transfer the animators’ pencil sketches directly onto the cels, giving the film its uniquely dynamic graphic style.
