Character background and lore

Michael Emerson is one of the main protagonists of *The Lost Boys*, a film directed by Joel Schumacher and released in 1987. Played by Jason Patric, he arrives with his mother Lucy and his younger brother Sam in the coastal town of Santa Carla, California.

Michael soon meets Star and the mysterious David, the charismatic leader of a group of young outcasts. After drinking what he believes to be wine, he gradually realises that he has in fact been drawn into a process of transformation into a vampire.

As the film progresses, Michael develops several supernatural abilities and begins to feel the effects of his transformation, whilst trying to resist the influence of David’s group. His brother Sam and the Frog brothers then try to find a way to save him before his transformation becomes irreversible.

Michael’s character thus plays a central role in the narrative, as he acts as a bridge between the human world and that of the vampires of Santa Carla. His gradual transformation, his inner conflict and his connection with Star contribute significantly to the atmosphere – at once romantic, gothic and horror-filled – that made *The Lost Boys* a cult film of the 1980s.
