Character background and lore

Konjiki no Yami, also known as Golden Darkness and more simply as Yami, is one of the main characters in To Love-Ru and, in particular, its sequel To Love-Ru Darkness. Her real name is Eve.

Yami was originally an extremely dangerous alien assassin. She arrives on Earth after being hired to eliminate Rito Yuki, the series’ protagonist. However, this mission does not go to plan, and Yami gradually ends up staying on Earth, where her relationships with Rito and those around him profoundly change her outlook on the world.

She possesses a body capable of transforming into various weapons, which explains her immense effectiveness in combat. Her hair, arms and other parts of her body can thus take on different offensive forms depending on the situation.

Despite her past as an assassin and her initially cold demeanour, Yami gradually develops a much more nuanced personality. In particular, she grows closer to Mikan Yuki, Rito’s sister, and begins to appreciate a much more peaceful existence on Earth.

Her relationship with Rito also evolves. The man she once regarded solely as a target gradually becomes someone important to her, even though Yami often finds it difficult to understand and express her own feelings.

In *To Love-Ru Darkness*, her past and the true nature of her abilities take on a much greater significance. The story explores, in particular, her identity as a true living weapon, as well as the existence of characters directly linked to her origins and her creation.

This contrast between a fighter designed to kill and a young girl gradually discovering friendship, affection and an ordinary life is one of Yami’s defining characteristics.
