Sonic, the fastest blue hedgehog of all time!

If you're a fan of video games, then you've probably already heard of Sonic, SEGA's super-fast blue hedgehog. Since his creation in the 1990s, Sonic has become one of the most iconic and beloved video game characters in the world. If you're new to the world of Sonic or want to know more about this mythical hedgehog, then this article is for you!

Sonic's origins

Sonic was created in 1991 by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara, and he first appeared on the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive) console with the game "Sonic the Hedgehog". The author saw the little hedgehog as a fast character, full of courage and energy. He also put a lot of emphasis on his look to make him recognisable to everyone: red shoes, white gloves and a small blue crest reminiscent of the original animal's quills. He quickly made an impression on gamers around the world, even becoming the mascot for the SEGA brand.

A devastating concept

What quickly made Sonic's strength was also the basic game concept. It was disconcertingly simple but unwaveringly fun: Sonic must get from point A to point B in levels where enemies, traps and acrobatics follow one another. Similar to many video games, you may say! Yes, except that here the hedgehog is particularly fast. This adds a difficulty, but also an indefinable exhilarating feeling. The hedgehog must also save his friends, animals imprisoned by Dr. Eggman, his sworn enemy.

At ShopForGeek, we love all these derivative objects and we offer them in our geek shop. Come and discover them?

Characters from the Sonic universe

Besides Sonic himself, the Sonic universe is populated by many other interesting and colourful characters. The most popular ones are :

  • Miles "Tails" Prower: Sonic's loyal companion, Tails is a two-tailed fox who can fly with his tails. He is often Sonic's partner in his adventures and also has his own special skills.
  • Knuckles the Echidna: This red hedgehog is the guardian of the Master Emeralds and is known for his exceptional physical strength. Although he was originally introduced as a rival to Sonic, he often becomes an ally in the fight against Dr. Eggman.
  • Dr. Eggman: Also known as Dr. Robotnik, he is Sonic's antagonist. He is a mad scientist with a penchant for robotics and evil plans to conquer the world. He is always on the hunt for the Chaos Emeralds, magical stones that would allow him to realize his evil ambitions.

Sonic video games

Numerous video games have also been released such as:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) - The original game that introduced Sonic to the world, where players can race through levels filled with enemies and loops to rescue animals captured by Dr. Robotnik.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) - The sequel to the original game with the addition of Sonic's faithful companion, Tails, which allows for cooperative play.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) - A direct sequel to Sonic 2 with the addition of a new character, Knuckles, and the ability to connect cartridges to unlock new content.
  • Sonic & Knuckles (1994) - A game that can be played on its own, but can also be connected with Sonic 3 to unlock new game areas.
  • Sonic CD (1993) - A game in which Sonic travels back in time to rescue Amy Rose and stop Dr. Robotnik from changing the past.
  • Sonic Adventure (1998) - The first 3D Sonic game with new playable characters and a more in-depth story.
  • Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) - The sequel to Sonic Adventure with the addition of new playable characters and a competitive multiplayer mode.
  • Sonic Generations (2011) - A game that celebrates 20 years of Sonic by combining elements of classic 2D and modern 3D games.
  • Sonic Mania (2017) - A 2D platformer inspired by the classic Sonic games with new levels and retro graphics.

Video game merchandise

Since its inception in the 1990s, Sonic has had time to make its mark on popular culture. Numerous spin-offs have been created, including cartoons, series and a live-action film. A second feature film is currently in preparation.

But many physical objects such as figurines, clothes, key rings and all kinds of goodies have also been sold on the market.
