Das Boot — U-96 Submarine — Revell Brick System, 6,483 pieces

Relive the atmosphere of the film Das Boot with this impressive replica of the German submarine U-96, designed by Revell as part of its Brick System range. Comprising around 6,483 building bricks, this officially licensed model combines the precision of model-making with a building experience designed for adult builders.

Built to a scale of 1:56, the submarine features the elongated silhouette of the Type VII C, its distinctive conning tower, periscopes, deck armament and the various pieces of equipment visible on the hull. The multicoloured bricks are precision-manufactured to ensure a stable build and to recreate the details of the vessel as depicted in the film.

The model is not limited to its external appearance. It also features a detailed interior, allowing you to view several technical spaces and living quarters within the submarine. This cutaway design highlights the particularly cramped environment in which the crew had to work, rest and carry out their missions.

All decorative parts are directly printed, eliminating the need for stickers. The set also includes an illustrated assembly guide and an A3-sized reproduction of the famous poster from the film *Das Boot*.

Origin and historical context

The U-96 was a German Type VII C submarine, a class widely used during the Second World War. Commissioned in 1940, it was commanded by Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock and undertook several patrols in the Atlantic.

Life on board these vessels was particularly gruelling. The crew had to share an extremely confined space, surrounded by torpedoes, machinery, pipes and provisions. The damp, lack of privacy, long periods of silence and the constant threat of attack made every mission dangerous, even when not engaged in combat.

The writer and war correspondent Lothar-Günther Buchheim embarked on German submarines, notably U-96. He drew on this experience to write the novel *Das Boot*, published in 1973, in which he describes the crew’s living conditions and the psychological strain of submarine operations.

Director Wolfgang Petersen adapted the novel for the cinema in 1981. The film follows a submarine crew on patrol in the Atlantic and places greater emphasis on the crew’s confinement, fear and exhaustion than on a heroic portrayal of war.

The sets were designed to accurately recreate the interior of a Type VII C submarine. The narrow passageways, the berths situated near the torpedoes, the control room and the engine room all contribute significantly to the sense of claustrophobia that characterises the film.

Revell’s Brick System model is directly inspired by this cinematic depiction. Its visible interior allows you to explore several key areas of the submarine and gain a better understanding of the vessel’s extremely compact layout.
