Character origin and lore

Hedorah first appeared in the Japanese film Godzilla vs. Hedorah, released in 1971. Unlike many of Godzilla’s opponents, which are inspired by dinosaurs or giant animals, Hedorah is an extraterrestrial creature whose development is directly linked to Earth’s pollution. After arriving on Earth, the organism feeds primarily on toxic substances and polluted sludge, enabling it to grow and evolve gradually.

Throughout the film, Hedorah takes on several forms corresponding to the different stages of its evolution. Its flying form, depicted by this POP! Supreme figure, appears after one of its transformations and enables it to move through the air. Whilst in flight, the monster releases a mist of extremely corrosive sulphuric acid, making this incarnation a threat not only to Godzilla but also to the environment and the population.

Due to its origins and abilities, Hedorah is generally regarded as the embodiment of the dangers associated with industrial pollution, a central theme of the 1971 film. Its strange silhouette, red eyes and multiple transformations have made it one of Godzilla’s most distinctive adversaries during the Showa era.
